Title: Les Miserables Author: Victor Hugo Genre(s): historical french fiction, epic novel Synopsis: ex-convict Jean Valjean manages to flee the law and make a new life for himself, but police officer Javert is on the hunt. And this is over the span of 2000 pages. Good luck. Recommended For: people who love classical writing styles and have long attention spans. It's a really good novel but unnecessarily long and difficult to read. Suicide and probably gore/extreme violence warning.

Title: Jean Christophe Author: Romain Rolland Genre(s): Synopsis: Jean Christophe begins as a talented young musician but soon struggles to earn a living and becomes tormented by the injustices in the world. Again this is in ten volumes so tread carefully. Also Jean Christophe is probably the closest thing to a queer main character in french lit i have ever read. Recommended For: advanced readers. Rolland won a Nobel Prize for this but it is very long and difficult to read, albeit easier than les mis. Warning for suicidal thoughts and actions.
