my mom keeps on bringing up these medical careers just in case I don't want to go to med school to become an actual doctor
and I'm trying to find ways to break it to her that I probably just want to major in english education but of course I'm not even really sure about that
like idk bottom line is I want to help people, and it would be so gratifying to be a doctor or to just work in the medical field, and I feel like I'd be happy doing it, but I mean jee I could help people as an english teacher too, I could introduce young students to literature and maybe get them interested, like that's helpful, and I'd be really happy doing that too. Like I don't know whether I consider literature a hobby of mine or something I want to work with for the rest of my life

Just remember that your future is exactly that: YOUR future. While she is allowed to give her opinion, you don't have to listen to her. When you declare your major, just tell your family, "Hey I want to be XYZ." If they don't agree, what's the worst that can happen? The only thing they can really threaten is to not pay your tuition, but there are loads of loans for that. Honestly, your at the age where you're allowed to make your own decisions, and if your parents don't like it, well sucks for them.
