there's a horrible article floating around about how benedict cumberbatch's ancestors owned slaves all throughout the civil war, and how that makes him individually a horrible person. And that his role in 12 years a slave is a desperate attempt to 'atone for his sins' but that he still has no excuse for profiting off of it
and like, the way I see it, there's literally nothing he can do. You can't change your family history, it's set in stone, and you're not responsible for it. The fact that his family owned slaves isn't relative to him in the slightest because he himself is against racism. The fact he's apologized for what his ancestors have done is proof of his morality on the issue. You can't blame someone because of what their parents or grandparents or seven times great grandparents did because they had no control over it. I'm sure if white americans looked far enough into their history, quite a few would discover slaveholding roots, because unfortunately that's how southern economy was back then. And the fact that their ancestors owned slaves does not make them horrible people. Heck, my father is descended from a line of abusive jerkfaces, but does that make me an abusive jerkface? No, because I know the difference between right and wrong in that respect.
Like I honestly don't care if you don't like benedict cumberbatch. It's always subjective and you're entitled to your opinion. But people need to stop deliberately finding excuses to hate him, because half of them don't even make sense. Your opinion is still valid, you really don't need to seek ways to prove it.
